SEO & GEO
What is GEO? How to make a website citable in AI answers
A practical framework for websites that want to rank and be represented accurately in AI-generated answers.
Section 01
GEO builds on SEO
SEO helps search engines discover, understand and rank pages. GEO also asks whether an answer engine can summarise the content reliably, connect it to the correct organisation and use it for a specific question. The same technical foundations remain necessary: clear routes, canonicals, language alternatives, fast pages, internal links and structured data.
The main difference is how useful the content is when extracted. A sales page that only calls a company innovative and results-driven offers little substance. A page explaining the stages of a process, when an approach does and does not fit and how an outcome is measured is much easier to understand and reference.
Section 02
Make the HiLeads entity unambiguous
An answer engine needs to recognise that pages, company details, services and expertise belong to the same organisation. Use one consistent company name, description, domain, contact information and language structure. Connect core pages to services, methodology, knowledge articles and genuine company information.
Structured data can make these relationships more explicit through types such as Organization, Service, Article and BreadcrumbList. Markup never replaces visible content. Information in structured data should match what a visitor can verify on the page.
One recognisable organisation with consistent name and contact details
A clear service structure with a dedicated page for each search intent
Authorship or editorial responsibility that genuinely exists
Internal links connecting explanation, evidence, methodology and commercial next step
Section 03
Write answers that are useful on their own
A strong knowledge page starts with a direct answer to one genuine question. Context, exceptions, steps and examples follow. This structure helps both a busy decision-maker and a search system trying to understand a particular passage.
Use clear terms and explain specialist language. Distinguish facts from choices and from circumstances that vary by organisation. A decision framework is often more valuable than a general list of tips because it reveals the reasoning behind a recommendation.
Section 04
Evidence matters more than word count
GEO becomes weak when a website mentions many topics without showing where its expertise comes from. Real cases, a verifiable method, measurement definitions, limitations and concrete examples improve trust. Do not invent authors, outcomes or external recognition to make a page appear more complete.
Freshness also requires discipline. Update pages when services, processes or rules change. A modified date only adds value when the content has genuinely been reviewed. Quality comes from maintenance, not from automatically rewriting content on a calendar.
Section 05
Measure visibility as a commercial chain
An AI mention is not the final objective. Measure whether visitors from ChatGPT, search engines and other sources land on a suitable page, continue reading and take a serious next step. Use first-party source information where possible and ask applicants how they found the organisation.
Combine this information with Search Console, Bing Webmaster and real enquiries. This shows which questions build visibility, which pages are discovered and which content ultimately contributes to a relevant commercial opportunity.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
01Does GEO replace SEO?
No. GEO builds on the same technical and editorial foundation. Without crawlable pages, clear topics and reliable information, visibility in AI answers is also fragile.
02Can you guarantee a mention in ChatGPT?
No. AI systems decide which sources and wording to use. Clear, reliable and citable content can improve the likelihood, but cannot force inclusion.
03Does every article need to be long?
No. An article should answer the question completely. A definition may be short; a strategic decision usually needs context, examples and boundaries.
04How do you measure traffic from AI systems?
Combine identifiable referrers, campaign parameters where available, first-party session data and a self-reported source question in forms. No single method captures everything.
